YouthSafe Manitoba:Safety First! Guidelines for School Field Trips (2004)

Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Manitoba Schools (2006)

Youthsafe Manitoba- School Field Trip Resource

This document covers activities that occur through the school, including those which take place in classrooms, on school grounds or at off-site destinations – local through international. These activities may be curricular or extra-curricular in nature.

While physical education and outdoor education courses or course elements are obvious targets, field trips, outdoor pursuits/aquatics and travel excursions are valuable ways to facilitate learning in many individual and combined curricula.

Examples abound:

a science teacher takes students canoeing to study river organisms and wildlife;

a language arts teacher hikes students to a local nature area for poetry inspiration;

a French teacher takes students on an exchange trip to Quebec;

a music teacher takes students on a performance tour in the United States.

In addressing student learning outcomes, teachers may select any number of appropriate off-site trips or activities that are supported by their principal and Board. Many schools also offer extracurricular clubs that attract students with a common interest; e.g., outdoor pursuits, leadership. School organized ski trips, camps, retreats or other special events are also common activities.

Administrators and teachers/leaders should be familiar with these safety guidelines if they are involved in any such endeavor(s).

The Youthsafe Manitoba document does not address safety issues related to traditional gymnasium or sports field based on-site physical education, playgrounds, intramurals or intercollegiate sports (e.g., basketball, track and field). For support and direction regarding safety related to these activities, readers are directed to the Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity in Manitoba Schools (2006).

This newly released version includes the amendments/additions from April 2004, and references back to the Youthsafe Manitoba: Safety first document where appropriate

Readers need to be aware that all outdoor pursuits/outdoor education/aquatics elements have been withdrawn from the Mb Safety guidelines document by the authors, and the Ministry of Education, Citizenship and Youth directs school Division/District staff to the YouthSafe Outdoors document at hand for this information.
