The School District of Mystery Lake supports initiatives which promote a positive approach to safety and belonging in all its schools. The Safe School Charter (Bill 30) expects that “each pupil enrolled in a school within the jurisdiction of the school board is provided with a safe and caring school environment that fosters and maintains respectful and responsible behaviours.”

In order to prevent violence and bullying, we are offering a safe school program for all our students from kindergarten to grade 12. schools participated in Rachel’s Challenge during the first week of December and will continue promoting acts of kindness for the rest of the year. Assemblies were organised for all students in Grades 6 to 12. Parents were invited to participate in the evening sessions held at the Letkemann Theatre on December 1, 2, 3 or 4, 2008.

Rachel’s Challenge is a program which promotes kindness and compassion. Powerful audio/video footage of Rachel's Challenge holds students spell-bound during a one-hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others. This is followed by a 45-minute training session involving both adult and student leaders. This is an interactive session that shows how to sustain the momentum created by the assembly. In the evening the Rachel’s Challenge presenter conducts a powerful session with parents and community leaders. To sustain the positive climate change in a school, Rachel’s Challenge offers a year-long curriculum called the Friends of Rachel (FOR) program which continues training students and connects them to activities that continue the chain reaction of kindness.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rachel’s acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for the most life-changing school program in North America. Her brother, Craig, was in the library that day and lost two close friends and narrowly escaped death himself. He was the only surviving student at Columbine who was in the library, the worst of the killing zone, and also lost a sibling.
