Hi There:
I also arrived in Thompson in the spring of 1960 with Terry White's family and others. I only attended Thompson High for one year- gr.11 (in the small school), but lived there until 1970 when I moved to BC. Would love to hear from some of the older group.
My brother, Wayne Mick also lives near here but does not have an email address. I would be pleased to forward any messages to him.

Wow - talk about surfacing memories of all those dances and parties back in the early years! So neat to see old familiar names.
I moved to Thompson in 1958, and even though I was supposed to be in grade 7, I didn't actually go to school til January of 1959 - no school til the house on Poplar Street. The initial classroom housed the elementary students in one end of the ell-shaped room, and the "older" students (only a few of us at first), on the other side. Miss Stewart was the first teacher. I recall new students arriving every week - kinda neat!
I then went to Juniper School, Riverside and then Thompson High School as each was built.
After grade 11, I went to Winnipeg to university, then taught High School in the Winnipeg area.
Once married, I moved to Ottawa, then Aylmer(Quebec), and now Gloucester, Ontario. I have been working for the government now for 20 years, and believe it or not, somehow I am still learning and taking courses. I travel a lot - business and pleasure, love the outdoors, ski, spend time with geneology, and can't believe I'm over 50!
I have a daughter, Karin, who is an environmental engineer, and a son, Rob, who just graduated in Commerce.
Some of you may remember my brother, Graham Hawkins; he's in Calgary.
I am very ashamed to admit that I have not gone back to Thompson since my parents moved from there in 1970. I will someday. I have never forgotten the people and my years there.

8/2/02 I spent only one semester in Thompson High School (9th grade) because I moved
to Thompson in 1958 and left during Christmas holidays, 1960. Two whole
years...the longest I'd ever lived anywhere up until I graduated from high
school. The nomadic existence of a construction brat. I've never been back,
but have vivid memories of northern lights whipping and crackling over the
skating rink, my boots getting sucked into melting permafrost, a gigantic
moose swimming the river, and wolves skulking behind our house. (We kept
whole cows, cut up and tightly packaged, in a large wooden locked box outside
the door. Every morning there were big canine footprints in the snow,
circling it.) I've had recurring 'Thompson dreams' throughout my life. I
would love to hear from anyone who was there at the same time, and remembers
me. And I intend to go back for a visit one day.

I don't know who remembers me - I am Volker Beckmann's "little sister" For those of the "real old-timers", we lived in South Africa 1963-64. I have lived in Winnipeg since 1965 but have travelled (infrequently) to Thompson to visit. It's true what they say that the north gets in your blood - I still miss it there! I would like anyone who might remember me to drop me a line - it would be so much fun to try and organize a reunion for those of us that hung out together during 1960-1965.

I moved to Thompson in 1960 from Flin Flon. We lived on Basswood all through the Sixties. R.D. Parker certainly was a special place for me. I liked it so much that I stayed for an extra year of grade 12. My wife Judy was a secretary in the office in 1970 and 1971. I did one of my practice teaching sessions there in February and March of 1973. The teachers that I worked with were Donna Michaels, Glen Ansine and Rod Murphy. I also had a short stint teaching grade 8 at the school in the fall of 1975. By that time the school was too big for me so I left. In 1978 we came to Westlock, Ab. where we still are. We have two daughters, Melanie and Carrie. Judy works in the office of the Westlock Long Term Care Centre . I am the principal of Richard F. Staples Secondary School. We are a grades 7 to 12 school with 800 students. Over the years I have run into some old friends from Thompson but not nearly enough.

of the Mikado production that Jim Hillyer mentioned in his note, which was
coordinated by Ernest Dueck who has now retired from teaching and is living
in Steinbach, Manitoba. It was a shame that the event didn't materialize.
I was sorry to see that I had also missed the earlier reunion of the class
of '72 as I have fond memories of those students when they were in my home

Well it certainly was interesting seeing who has dropped by. I haven't been back to Thompson for years, however I did have some very wonderful times there. I was a tad bit wild and reckless during my youth, but I believe I more than made up for it as I aged. I got married in Thompson in '69, had two children there, then moved to the Yukon. We had one more daughter, born in a helicopter, and so by the time I was 23, had three girls and figured that was enough. I was in school, taking regular grade 12 when my last one was born, she was born at Christmas break and I continued on graduating, the only student, in 1974. That year I was hired in the mine in Engineering, the first woman in a non-traditional job, and opened the door for women to work in open pit mines. From there I moved to BC, got my diploma in Social Work, the Life Skills Coach Training, Addictions Counselling, Volunteer Management, and a couple more before I finally went and got a degree. I graduated from U of Alberta in 1989. Sherry, my oldest daughter graduated from grade 12 the week before, so she brought her cap and gown to U of A and we got our pictures taken together. Too cool! My husband passed away in 1980, he had leukemia, and so I raised the three girls. They are all fine and well now. Brandy, the youngest had an av malformation in her brain, and so when she was 9 I had to take her to Europe for an operation. She had a brain tumor 2 years ago, but through many prayers and meditations she healed it, and she is doing well. Brandy and Tanya, the middle one, both live and work in Kelowna, and Tanya just had a baby boy, Hunter last week. Brandy has two children Schyla 7, and Brandon 3. I am really blessed and know it. I have been a student of the Tao for a couple of years and went to Taiwan last year for 5 weeks. I work at Riverview Hospital now, am the Vocational Counsellor for Community Clients, I love my job, my life, my students, etc. I teach English to some Mandarin people and I also teach Life Skills at the hospital. Life is full, and when I have time I golf, travel, play bridge, euchre, mah jongg, and take more courses. I still have lots of energy and still have the same cheerleading attitude...but I have calmed down some. haha If there is anyone that would like to talk with me, please email me, or if you come to BC please call me...we can do golf, restaurants, or I can be an excellent tour guide. Glad to see that many people are alive and doing well. I am too! Namaste, Reta

I've been married over 25 years to a wonderful lady named Jan who I met here in Wpg. in 1974 and have have a wonderful son who is now 21 years old. I see Doug Mullin ( Stonewall, MB) periodically as well as Blair Alderson ( Thompson )and Don & Darla Berthelette ( Thompson ). I did communicate with John Bell in Calgary for awhile, but lost contact with him. Same as with Ken Wall in Burnaby, B.C. I think a reunion would be an excellant idea. Anyone who would like to E-mail me, I would be happy to respond to.

Great to see names and comments from folks way back to the Thompson High School days. Married Dawne MacLean (also from Thompson) 37 years ago and we are living just outside of Calgary. Someone asked about the Wakefields. Al is reported to be living somewhere in Alaska. Hope to see you all at the reunion.

A warm feeling just came over me when I found this website.
Thompson and RDPC are sources of many special memories for me and I owe very
much of what/who I am to those early years in Thompson (1962-1970). I would
appreciated hearing from any of my former friends and classmates. Also,
please keep me updated on any reunions, events, etc. Thanks, SF

This is a great website! It has brought back lots
of memories. I remember the split shifts, and the
construction of the "new" RDPC. I attended THS when
I was in grade 7 - scared silly of those High School
students. I also remember the Hi-C dances at the
Church. I left Thompson in 1971 after getting married
there. My daughter Trenna was born in Thompson.
We moved to Calgary and stayed there for 19 years.
I have since moved to Sask. Coleville was my birth
place. I lived here before we moved to Thompson in
1962. My daughter Trenna still lives in Calgary along
with my grandson Colin who is 9. My parents, Doc &
Bubbie Hogarth live in Kindersley, SK (18 miles from
me) along with my brother Kirk and his family. Brother
Burke also lives in Coleville. Six of us girls who
went to school together in Thompson get together
every two years at Madge Lake. Carola (Becker) Dobvniak,
Connie (Campbell) Tennison, Barb (Sereda) Crawford,
Bev (Hilding) Cook, Jacquie (McInnis) Sivertson and
myself rent a cabin, drink wine, eat very well and talk
all weekend. We have solved all the world's
problems over and over again. I often wonder what
has happened to all our classmates. If you have a
reunion, please let me know.

Interesting reading the comments, was back to Thompson in 94 and
truthfully, as if you would want it any other way, IT SUCKED! But hey this
is one person's opinion eh! We moved to Thompson in the late 50's(from Moak
Lake have heard my parents say "we were the 6th family in Thompson", I was
only 2 or 3, just biting tires) and I personally think it is a great place
to be "from". Have lived in BC, Sask, and Canada, I mean ONT. (Stratford)
now that is a nice place, just too expensive. Residing in Swan River MB
working for a Forestry outfit. Hey RDPC was a blast, still remember the
"Polar Bear" tourney and beating Flin Flon for the first time in B Ball,
Mr. Smith, if I recall wanting to duke it out with the Ref :) The Dances,
the decorations, lunch time in the "multipurpose room", hot cans of
"chili-con-carny". Life goes on.

I have been living in the N.W.T. for the last 20 years. My father still lives in Thompson. I have only been back about 4 times the last visit was just recently. I have 4 children and have been divorced for 3 years. I work for First Air airlines and right now on a one year leave of absence. I am taking my 3 youngest children (13,12, and 9) for a trip to Australia,Asia, and Europe leaving tomorrow morning. When I was back in Thompson last week I went to the highschool and looked at some of the year books, it was great to see so many familiar faces. I am looking for a very old friend, Gaylene Kress who also had a brother named Kieth. They moved to Kamloops in 1971 and I've never heard from them again. If anybody knows of their whereabouts, please let me know.

Hey, I think of RDPC and Thompson now and then. Our family arrived in 1967, left and returned to leave again...I can't quite recall the exact dates..... A teacher Lonnie Anderson actually lived with us..I am not sure what she taught, I was just a kid. I remember the Thompson family and Yogi...I played hockey and loved the outdoors. Now living in Toronto. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers me or my 2 younger sisters. Claudette and Angela....They do not have emails...

Sep14/02Hi! Thompson was my last and graduating year of high school. I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere compared to the strict style I had come from in Ont. Met some really nice people there, started my music there. Have entertained kids for 15 years started jam sessions here 13 years ago, play 12 string, learning (still) fiddle, tenor guitar, mandolin. Remember Romania's? I have two wonderful boys, 19 and 17 yrs old and my ex is my best friend. Anyone know where Gaye Shinney is ? Can't remember her married name. I now work for Community Mental Health Assoc. here and am very happy

I worked in the mines and suddenly I ventured into this site. I was stunned, I had thought over the years that the town had been closed down.My brother in law now in Pickering married the mine manager about 1969, I didn't think that there was a school in the region. How wrong I was. I still have photos of your Prime Minister the Hon Pierre Elliot Trudeau with us having lunch sometime in 1979 when he visited the area but I believe he has since passed away.
I still have photos of that cemetery with 28 unknown victims found under the floor boards of tent city. It was a tough place but the people were equally resolute and TOUGH.
I can't imagine living in those conditions of extreme cold. I have only a pair of shorts, a tee shirt and thongs for Winter and Summer..
However all the best and I didn't know there was a high school when I lived there.
